There are few places in Michigan that feel as breathtaking and timeless as the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. With miles of rolling dunes, views of Lake Michigan, and the soft golden light that settles over the sand in the evening, it’s the perfect location for engagement photos that feel both romantic and adventurous.

This engagement session at the dunes felt relaxed and effortless from the moment we arrived. The wind moving through the grass, the warm sand under our feet, and the wide open sky created the most beautiful backdrop for capturing this season of their story together.

Silver Lake is one of my favorite places for engagement sessions because the landscape changes constantly as you move through the dunes. Every turn offers a new view—soft rolling sand, dune grass glowing in the light, and endless skies stretching over Lake Michigan.

As the sun started to drop, the light became softer and warmer, creating that dreamy glow that makes the dunes so special. We spent the evening wandering through the sand, stopping when the light felt just right and letting moments unfold naturally.

What I love most about photographing couples here is how the environment encourages movement and connection. Walking through the dunes, laughing in the wind, and pausing to watch the sunset all create images that feel genuine and timeless.

The dunes photograph beautifully in every season, but late summer and early fall evenings offer especially beautiful light.

What to Wear for Dune Engagement Photos

Neutral colors always photograph beautifully in the dunes. Soft tones like ivory, beige, warm browns, and muted blues complement the sand and sky without distracting from the moment.

Flowy dresses and comfortable outfits that allow movement work especially well for engagement sessions here since walking through the dunes naturally creates movement and interaction.

Because the dunes require some walking, many couples bring sandals or go barefoot while exploring the sand.
