There is something incredibly peaceful about the quiet of the dunes along Lake Michigan. The soft sand, the warm evening light, and the wide open sky create a setting that feels both calm and breathtaking. This maternity session at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes was the perfect way to celebrate this beautiful season of waiting and anticipation.

Silver Lake is one of my favorite locations for maternity sessions in Michigan. The dunes stretch for miles, creating a natural and timeless backdrop that photographs beautifully in every season. As the sun begins to set, the sand glows with warm tones and the light becomes soft and dreamy—perfect for capturing intimate, emotional moments.

During this session we spent time walking through the dunes, letting the wind and movement create natural moments. The peacefulness of the landscape allowed everything to feel relaxed and effortless. Instead of focusing on posed moments, we leaned into the quiet connection between them and the excitement of the baby they are about to welcome.

Planning Your Silver Lake Sand Dunes Maternity Session

The best time for maternity photos at Silver Lake is just before sunset when the light becomes soft and golden. The dunes create beautiful texture and depth, and the open horizon allows the sky to glow with color.

For wardrobe, neutral tones such as ivory, cream, soft beige, and muted earth tones photograph beautifully against the sand. Flowing dresses also work especially well because they move naturally with the wind and add softness to the images.

Because the dunes require a bit of walking, comfortable footwear is always helpful for getting to the best spots before switching into your session outfit.
